For the First Project we had to take a photo or an object and somehow repurpose them in an odd or interesting way. With copyright laws always breathing down your neck i found this projects brief to be an interesting one. Yes the images aren’t mine but in a sense i’ve made my own slice of ownership through altering them. At the time of thinking what i could do for this project I was looking at an article showing humorous signposts from around the world.

I then remembered that my mother recently took a trip to China and took lots of photos of signposts she saw along the way. Signs like “No Tossing Area” which we all know what it means but can’t help thinking of something else. So for my project I decided to put signposts in odd places in the world.

This is a photo that was taken in the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA. I then added in a “mind the gap” notice on the floor which you would normally only see in train station platforms and places like the London Underground. In effect it reinvents the use as instead of warning passerby’s about the traintracks or any impeding trains coming along the way they are instead warned about walking off the edge of a cliff instead

This photo was taken in a place called “Race Track Playa” with their world renowned “Sailing Rocks” which is a phenomenon that isn’t found anywhere else on earth. Located in a dried up Lake Basin in the northwestern side of Death Valley in the USA rocks there seem to slide around seemingly by themselves with no human or animal interaction, even theories about the wind and rain pushing them along have been debunked and to this day it is still a mystery. Using this photo i’ve added a “Rock Slide Area” sign normally found alongside roads in rocky or mountainous areas of the world, pun intended it’s meaning has shifted to refer to the rocks Racetrack Playa is famous for.

This photo of a ruined school was taken in Northern Syria in an area controlled by rebels. Taking liberty of the damage caused by the shelling of this little town I added a “mind the school children sign” in the bottom corner. Burnt, bent and covered in dust it’s meant to show that it’s original use was to remind car owners that school children are near and to drive safely but now it’s wondering why it was ever there in the first place, there are no school children left to save. With the UK now set to start bombing Syria after the attacks in Paris more schools like this are set to be destroyed.
